Is it wrong to make jokes to break the ice?

Well I was at the community art class today, we are a group of mature students that like painting and drawing. We did get a shock when we walked in and realised we were doing still life today!
The model, in his late 40s walked in, and you could have heard a frog piss on cotton when he disrobed. I just laughed and said "wow, someone is feeling the cold today" & "talk about a tiny paintbrush" It broke the ice and everyone relaxed but the model gave me the evils.

It's the best way to begin if you do any public speaking..make them laugh right off the bat and they will forgive any screwups. I think it's a great way to break the ice in almost any social situation...puts everyone at ease

I tend to use humour in uncomfortable situations but I'm also generally an upbeat person anyway..
