A certain amount of personal freedom, I think. I used to be able to go to the store down on the corner, catch the streetcar into town to see a movie with friends, and walk to and from school when I was under 7 years old, and it was pretty common. Our parents weren't negligent, we all played together, the adults looked out for us and we knew to be home when the sun started to go down. Ironically that changed when we moved to the suburbs and I felt less safe, but I could still go ride my bike. I don't know if kids disappear more now or if we just didn't hear about it back then.
