@Graylight Yes the battle flag of northen Virginia
Graylight · 51-55, F
@Firespirit And so much more, as you well know. That's a little like saying the swastika simply stood for German pride.
Donna15 · 41-45, F
@Firespirit I don't think that is correct. The Army of Northern Virginia battle flag was square, yours looks to be rectangle. Now there were a large number of rectangle flags used buy different Armies during the war of northern aggression but few from Va.

@Graylight The swastika was bastardized by the Nazi regime. It has a rich history going back thousands of years. Its the just Americans and there obsession about race which give us the big problem.

@Firespirit Yes, the swastika goes back much, much further than the Germans. However, after something is co-opted and identified so deeply and strongly with that cause, people, etc, it becomes a cultural icon. There's just no escaping that. Yes, there were battle Flags with the Confederate symbol emblazoned on them, but that flag became synonymous with defiance, slavery and racism. No discussion of its origins is going change that.
And this is not so much about an obsession with race as it is the constant vigilance to try and ameliorate the long history of racism in this country.

The Confederate battle flag has only become a racist symbol in past 10 yrs or so. I've known people that have flown them in many states for years and no one associated it with racism until past couple years. Of course we can thank KKK for some of that, wish they had continued using US flag.

@emmayoung Proud of veterans of both sides that fought and died be that for or against Slavery. They are all Vets and should be treated as such.

@emmayoung They are officially honored as veterans either way. yes Slavery was apart but black and men men and women still fly the flag to honor there family and history. Seems rather childish to discrete a grave over something that happened So many years ago. The British did also but we don't judge the Union jack the same.
