It's a democratic republic or a "representative democracy", not a Democracy. Democracy is dirext rule by the people. The people make up legislation. In representative democracy, or a republic, we elect leaders to do that, for us.
It's really semantics. It could fall under either democracy or republic. It has aspects of both, I think. If one wants to be tedious. But it's technically representative democracy or a democratic republic.
