Do you pick sides when people are in an argument?

Did I undertand well what “ picking sides is” if I say it means taking one person’s position or the other’s one?
If so, I try to understand why each of them say what they say, when the topic could be a subject of different interpretations. And try to intervine as less as possible.

If it’s a matter of a scientific or proof fact, I intervine.
