@NickiHijab @Firespirit Because 'not transgender' is vague and unhelpful. Cisgender makes linguistic sense and there was a need for it, particularly if you're writing about it a lot as many people do.

@CountScrofula Male and Female seems okay to me if we’re referring to ‘cis genders’ but I guess it makes sense to coin a term if it’s written about a lot.

@NickiHijab Well the way you'd use it is "0.3% of the population is transgender, 99.7% of the population is cisgender" - so male/female can't apply there.

People get annoyed because it's like "Why are you giving me this new label? Wtf?" but it's just filling an absence. Saying "99.7% of the population are male/female" is just gonna be confusing.
