What do you feel gives you the right to crack someone on the nose?

I talk first. I'm a runner so frequently get attacked by people's dogs (I've heard every excuse) I tend to confront people but am light on my feet, most people back down if you face up to them (I'm in the UK- I think it's important to say that as different cultures have different approaches to each other).
