Go away to college or continue to commute?

My mom is a very negative person, encouraging me to drop out frequently. I hardly have any freedom at home . Should I go away , or stay at home to avoid upsetting my family. I commuted the first two years of college, but it might be nice to have a bit more independence. But I don’t want to upset my family either. I’m quite conflicted on the situation. If you don’t mind please tell me why you chose the option you did. Thanks .
