Are tattoos just a badge for the stupid?

There was one guy I knew who sportsd a tattoo on his right shoulder that was a circular pattern of question marks. He said that he hated it and planned one day to get it done over as something else.

He imparted to me that he decided to get a tattoo one night and couldn't decide what her wanted, settling on the aforementioned pattern at the suggestion of the artist.

Why get an unwanted tattoo for the sake of joining the ranks of the "inked"?! My personal distaste for the things aside, it struck me as such a pointless waste, especially in light of his continued regret.
