They have different functions....
Q & A/Stories is the backbone of SW, where posts are public so pretty much everyone can see them (unless blocked). PMs are a more private conversation, for times where you want top converse with an individual without including everyone else.
Each has its place/purpose....and it isn’t really a “preference” as much as an alternative means of communicating.
