Do you respect your mother?

I appreciate many of the things she did for me when I was young, during the 50% of time that she was sober.

She died, aged 91, about 6 years ago.

I'd like to say I respected her because I believe every human being deserves respect, simply for being sentient.

But I can't.

She was an alcoholic with Korsakoff's dementia, no empathy, no conscience, no memory, and very little intelligence.

The consequences for me, my sister and my father were disastrous.
