Why should women have to pay for pads and tampons?

Pads and tampons can be quite expensive and girls can't help it that they are going through extreme amounts of pain and are bleeding uncontrollably. Having a period is not a choice and women shouldn't have to pay for it. They should be free because not everybody can afford them even though it is completely necessary

No woman chooses to have a period, and society demands we use these products. Let's not forget that without them we'd be bleeding all over the place which is not only unseemly but also unhygienic due to blood-borne illness and disease. Without periods humankind as we know it would not exist. It is hypothesized that humans first learned to keep track of time by comparing a woman's cycle with the phases of the moon. It also goes without saying that man would literally not exist if it weren't for periods. These products are a necessity and companies are making billions every year by women.

The same argument could be made for deodorant, soap, food, clothes, housing...
I agree that for women who truly cannot afford it, there should be provision made (same as for soap, food, etc).
But for the vast majority of women in the western world, an extra pound or two per month is nbd.
Someone has to pay for it, so it seems to me very reasonable that the people using the products pay for them.

@Randomlygenerated deodorant and everything else see necessities for both sexes. Women are paying for something that is essential only for them.

So who should pay for it then? Men?
It's because it is essential to women that they pay for it. Why would you be exempted from paying for something because it is essential?

@Randomlygenerated Government funded.

@Deletedlol But the government can't magically print extra money. It comes from taxes, which comes from the people. So either men and women pay equally for women's products (via tax) or else just the women who are using them (and then they have autonomy over choosing whether to buy disposable pads, reusable, cups, etc).
