Why do some people cremate the dead?

Wouldn't you rather want to have a place in the cemetery, where you could visit the deceased? I know they put the ashes in an urn, but most keep it in their homes, so others might not have access to it, especially if they don't get along with the host family (for whatever reason). Plus you can lose the urn, or it gets stolen, house burns down, etc.

Funeral costs are expensive, so some people prefer to get cremated, and put in an urn instead of purchasing a coffin which can be thousands of dollars depending on what you purchase. In the Catholic Church, you can now get cremated and put in an urn, but you need to still be buried in a burial plot.

@marsbar Hm I didn't know that Catholics could be cremated.

@Dan193 Yes. My mom told me a few years back when they changed the laws.

@marsbar religious laws? doesn't sound right for some reason xP

@Dan193 The proper term with the Catholic Church is cannon law.

@marsbar I understand, it just doesn't sit well with me, that they can just change those laws. It takes away from their original authenticity.

@Dan193 They change things every few decades it seems, even the responses during mass & certain prayers. It takes a while to get used to.

@marsbar Right.

@marsbar In th catholic church you do not "need" to be buried either body or ashes.

@emmalouise That's what my mom told me. Maybe it's different between the diocese in Canada & the US? I don't know.

@emmalouise would God give different catholics different laws

@emmalouise I looked it up. The ashes need to be put in an urn/container & either buried, put in a mausoleum or columbarium. They can't be scattered.
