Racist much?

There was a customer who came into the store and told me how excited she was to finally see someone who looked like her working here. We are both Asian and I couldn't help but to feel she was being a bit racist with that statement. Why does it matter so much? It's not a big deal

We just keep moving the bar for what racism is lower and lower and lower.

It's not terrible to want to interact with your own kind as long as you're able to interact with people different from you too. I think it becomes a problem, or can be viewed as racist, is if the only people you are able to interact with are like you and you can't or wont' interact with different people.

@laserfocus then her comment would suggest to me that perhaps the other staff make her uncomfortable, for that perhaps she just feels lonely where she is.

It sounds more like a well meaning but not well thought out comment as opposed to a malicious remark.
It not so much about race but representation.

Representation matters!

It is normal. I do not think she was racist. Everybody has in group preferences.

I'm not so sure it was racist, more a reaction to feeling less isolated.
I am not certain that is not racist but I am sure it is not offensively racist.
You’re right it’s not a big deal. Maybe she thinks that because you’re both Asian that you might be more nicer to her or something like that. That’s how it was for me when I got my first job.

i also don't see it as being racist in any shape or manner. maybe you don't like being asian and would prefer being caucasian … 'exhibit-a' being you bleached your hair to simulate europeans or americans. i am not crucifying you … just an observation on my part.

You dont look asian to me
No, I wouldn’t have taken it that way necessarily. She might’ve said it because she’s been experiencing racism from others.
