@oneperson Do yourself a favor and watch the original run followed immediately by End of Evangelion. All the rest is window dressing and rebooting. The heart and soul of the show is in the original run. And I don't know about anyone else, but I've never identified with someone as much as I did with Shinji.
Also, Berserk (the manga or the original anime) is another profoundly moving example of the craft.
