I had a friend in Washington and people would always buy her drinks if we were in a drinking establishment. It was a bit weird, but we had a friendly physical relationship. It would have been rough if I was 'in love' with her.

It can take a bit of getting used to. I was married to a woman who was rather attractive even though she never used makeup. I lost count of the amount of times that men looked at her and me and got that expression on their faces that said, " WTF is she doing with him ?"

I was actually quite amused by this constantly. I didn't have a lot of money either. Weirdly she liked me for who I was.
