I'm hungry, but I have no food. So during the war and famine what were people doing to survive. To fight their hunger?

My father came back from WW2 and couldnt find employment.To feed my older brother and sisters he raided an allotment.He had every right too.Hate to hear you have no food,and wish you well :(
