Call them, but don't apologize. Just call after the fact to acknowledge their birthday, plain and simple. Be cool, don't be guilt ridden with anxiety.
Don't send a belated birthday card either, because it makes it obvious that you genuinely forgot. Pick up the phone and call. Shit happens, but don't tell the person that!
If an ordinary birthday card that is mailed is obviously going to arrive at the person's house late, don't even send it. In fact, don't even buy it. Call them instead but call a day or two early and prior to their birthday to wish them a happy birthday over the phone. More personal that way!
There are many ways to subliminally disguise the fact that you forgot!
Then, after they have accepted your very classy, very personal birthday telephone call of which you DO NOT acknowledge the fact that you are painfully late out of the gate, climb to the top of the nearest volcano and hurl your sorry ass into the molten lava below, knowing as you vaporize that you did the right thing!
