I am a liberal in the US and I don't overly trust the government. What does being "against the 2nd Amendment" mean to you?

@CoxswainOtter Those with mental issues, those with felonies, certain domestic abuse issues, those that have been dishonorably discharged, etc.

@CoxswainOtter Well right now, you could be arrested, diagnosed with a violent schizophrenia, get meds, get out and go buy a gun.

I don't think anyone is saying people with depression can't own guns. I think that if a doctor is saying, "This person is a danger to himself and others", we need to restrict their ability to buy a firearm.

@CoxswainOtter The did say he had Aspergers, but also quite a few other issues.
A report issued by the Office of the Child Advocate in November 2014 said that Lanza had the developmental disorder Asperger's syndrome, and as a teenager suffered from depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, but concluded that they had "neither caused nor led to his murderous acts." The report went on to say "his severe and deteriorating internalized mental health problems... combined with an atypical preoccupation with violence... (and) access to deadly weapons... proved a recipe for mass murder".
This may not be a perfect system, it may need tweaking, but having someone with some issues, not be able to get a gun is safer than allowing anyone issues or not to get a gun.

@CoxswainOtter Of course it would be mentioned, it would be one piece of the puzzle. Don't be so naive as to think that having depression in the past isn't one more piece of the puzzle that could tell us why someone went on a spree killing.

@CoxswainOtter You seem to be implying that labeling someone as "mentally ill" is going to be a direct line to them losing firearms. I don't think that's the case. As I mentioned lots of people have a variety of mental illness they deal with and overcome every day.

I don't see this as a slippery slope any more than not allowing a felon to have access to firearms. Are you worried misdemeanors could soon lose access to firearms? Parking tickets?

@CoxswainOtter Well I suppose that's where we disagree, I don't feel like that narrative is being pushed.
