Question about culture?

[c=#002673]USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Scandinavia, Spain, Greece, Australia, New Zealand etc. These are all considered to be “western” countries. They all have different cultures BUT they do all share some commonalities between them that define them as “western”. What do you think are some of the qualities that all “western” cultures share?[/c]

Eurocentricism, primarily.

@bijouxbroussard I find this type of talk very fascinating. I love history and what we learn from it. Think about this. Why Europe? I mean, clearly Europe has been (through the whole of history) the most influential continent. In other words it much be much easier for an American or a French person to assimilate into Germany than in say, India or Saudi Arabia. The cultures of Germany, USA, France are similar because they stem from background that was similar. Think of this. Why was it Europe that set out a “colonized” the world? Why couldn’t it have been Asia or any other continent? What made Europe so strong at that time while others were not? At first the big ones to colonize the New World was Portugal, England and France. Then Germany, Dutch etc followed suit. I often ponder why it couldn’t have been say an African nation to “conquer” and colonize the world or why not say Japan? I love history so much and what we can learn from its mysteries!

@XenonRush It was also poverty in Europe at that time. Bad climate, burning witches and starvation. Many just couldn't bear to live in Europe anymore. Also Japan colonized a lot until WWII. But I agree, Europe went to the extremes. Very interesting... I guess Africa for example was not so developed at that time. I just thought. It was also kind of an accident that columbus found africa. He wanted to sail to India in the first place.
@Cr3ami There were African civilizations that existed during the 6th though 15th centuries, and not just in Egypt or North Africa. Although Dna and modern technology indicate that there was some movement from parts of Africa into Spain, Italy, Greece, the Mediterranean.
