I used to be staunchly anti hunting until we had a huge population explosion followed by some disease outbreaks. Including chronic wasting disease the past few years. Population control seemed like a much more humane idea afterall.

I have never gone hunting I don't think I have the stomach to kill anything unless maybe if I was lucky in defense of the lives of those I care about or my own. But I never thought of those hunting deer as doing so to be tough, though I can't say I get the whole pose with the dead carcass thing either.
