I wonder why for a lot of People (myself included) it's an instant thought to shake or hit something if it's not working?

Human instinct, I suppose. If thing isn't doing as it should then give it a good bashin' and it'll set it right.

Maybe it's because when humans are not working properly a shake or hit can get them started again...an evolutionary thing perhaps..
