Why didn't Ned demand a Trial by Combat?

GOT - Ned? Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North. The childhood friend of Robert Baratheon, Eddard ("Ned") was a key player in Robert's rebellion, helping to win the throne from the Targaryens. He is married to Catelyn (Tully) Stark.
I think he was told if he confessed he would be set free and his family would not be harmed.
