Why do people actually take these conspiracies seriously?

First: Chemtrails-- if a higher group of people wanted to let a poison into the air to slowly kill the population, they would be affected as well. If these planes are covering up a secret planet, those dinky little thin clouds aren't hiding much.....

I know a person that believes the earth is flat. I've said, you know at 30,000 ft in a airplane one can see the curvature of the earth. And the photos that have been taken from space, the earth is a globe. He doesn't fly, it's all a conspiracy to cover the truth.
