Is being independent a good thing?

I grew up without a parent for the most part. So I had to pay for my own food and take care of my brother when I was about 7 or 8 because momma was alwaays drinking. Now I'm with a parents who provides for me but because I was alone the majority of my life I became extremely independent. Some people I say I'm to independent. My boyfriend says I can always depend on him then sent me this song:
