I think megapixels is no longer the important metric. What matters more is how they balance out contrasts and light, and HDR is an important feature to have. What is also important is how tightly does the lens focus, and can you have a broad focus or only narrow.
For most photos, cameras already have too many megapixels (more than you actually need to get a great photo). But most cameras still manage to take a lousy photo because they don't balance out the other lighting and focusing variables well.

Yes. But there are phones with better cameras now
