SimilarWorlds is overloaded - what's happening

Hello,

In the past 3 days, we have been experiencing a number of DDoS attacks.
This means that many bots (from countless IP addresses) are attacking SW, all at the same time, for several minutes/hours, causing the site to go down (and you seeing a "SW is overloaded" error message).

We are currently working on a solution for this, but we're simply not ready yet to make the switch right now.

We're doing all we can, and we hope by tomorrow this will be fully mitigated, to prevent these attacks from being effective again in the future.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Your data is safe.

Kind regards.

Mmmm. I use a VPN to go to certain sites that Alabama has banned. Sometimes I forget to switch back before I go to SW. Can that cause a problem?
helenS · 36-40, F
@MoveAlong It's about one hundred million access requests...
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@MoveAlong Can you give me an example of a site that Alabama has banned??? 🤔
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
@sarabee1995

Probably porn.

VA banned porn without age verification, yet I live in MD. I kept getting age verification requests saying it is required in VA. The Comcast traffic must have been hosted by a server across the River. So I switched to Opera and its free VPN.

Yet recently it seems to have stopped. Maybe people complained to Comcast.

@sarabee1995 Banned unless you go through verification a process. There are a couple of sites that won't connect to the server at all unless I go to them using a VPN. Then, no problem.

No, I won't mention any websites.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@MoveAlong Okay, so if I hear you right, nothing is banned. It's just that some sites require age verification. I don't have an issue with that.
shinyplasticlove · 51-55, M
@JoyfulSilence Same in ND. Some sites you have to do an age verification and some sites are not available in ND. Don't ask how I know this.🤪
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
@shinyplasticlove

Age verification is spreading.

But what happens if it overtakes all the VPN servers? At least I found a free browser. I bet someday they will want money.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@MoveAlong @shinyplasticlove @JoyfulSilence What is so wrong with age verification? I see this as a good thing.
shinyplasticlove · 51-55, M
@sarabee1995 In order to do that I think you have to create an account. I'm not doing that.
MoveAlong · 70-79, M
@JoyfulSilence My VPN server is in Switzerland. And I do pay for it.

@MoveAlong sites Alabama have banned? That state and banning comical things
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@shinyplasticlove And that's fine. That is a choice you have. I just think age verification in order to protect kids is a good thing.

@SW-User What sites have been banned by Alabama??
MoveAlong · 70-79, M
@sarabee1995 That's the parents job IMO.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@MoveAlong So is making sure they don't drive cars until they are old enough to know how and be properly trained. And so is making sure they don't drink.

But we have restrictions on their access to these things. Are you saying we shouldn't??
MoveAlong · 70-79, M
@sarabee1995 I'm saying adults shouldn't be restricted in any way from reading or viewing anything on the internet that is available and legal.
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
@sarabee1995

It is a privacy issue. I do not want my name on some strange database sold to the highest bidder so they can send me spam, etc.

If there was some way to do it without them storing my information, that would be better. But then could I trust that third party verification company?

I give the government my data to get a driver's license, and expect the government to keep my data private and not sell it to marketers and the dark web. Can I trust others?

Of course, I trust banks and credit card companies, and airlines and hotel companies, etc. But I am less concerned about the world knowing I flew on a plane than the world knowing what genre of pornography I prefer.

If I get carded at a liquor store, the clerk does not write my name down. Of course, if I use a credit card I suppose they could record that. Yet I do not care if the world knows I drink.

I do not know the proper solution.
MoveAlong · 70-79, M
@JoyfulSilence Why didn't I just say that. Thanks
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@JoyfulSilence Understood. I don't know the proper solution either, but I'd rather err on the side of protecting kids. 🤷‍♀
MoveAlong · 70-79, M
@sarabee1995 It doesn't matter much what your do. If you know kids you know they will find a way.

Besides the administration is probably going to try to make all porn illegal before long. Thus creating another criminal class. If there is a demand it will be met.
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
@MoveAlong

I was able to I install Opera with its free VPN with nobody asking me to verify my age.
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
@sarabee1995

This society of ours is strange. Normal reproductive acts are taboo, but TV is saturated with graphic violence, fighting, death, etc. Some are even sports! And then they like to murder animals for "sport." Very strange society with very strange priorities.

Of course kids should be shielded from it all.
MoveAlong · 70-79, M
@JoyfulSilence I get my VPN through my email service Protonmail.com. It $24.99 a year when I bought it. The email service is free though.

BTW Proton Mail is the best email service I've ever had. It's encrypted both ways. It's server is in Switzerland and It was developed by the scientists at CERN.
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
@MoveAlong

I just use whatever came with my ISP.

Also, I have gmail.
MoveAlong · 70-79, M
@JoyfulSilence It's legal to fk but you can't watch someone do it. Strange
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
@MoveAlong

Are you being repressed?
