We increased GIF size limit to 5MB!
Hello everyone, 🍁 🌠 🎃 👻
We have been aware that one of the biggest frustrations of our users is that we had a very small maximum size allowed for uploading animated images (GIFs). 👀
The reason is that GIFs are very hard to compress into smaller files, unlike static Photos/Images. If we allowed users to upload 5MB+ images, without reducing them into small <1MB files, there would be two problems:
1) Our storage usage would greatly increase, and so would our expenses 📈
2) Posts containing those GIFs would also be "heavier" (more data being downloaded into the visitors' devices) ⏱️
However, we have just gone around that! 👍👌
Our system is now able to compress GIF images into much smaller files, and therefore, we're now supporting GIF images up to 5MB! 🔥🔥
We will be testing & monitoring how this goes, and there may be a chance that we will increase this limit in the future. 🤯
