Clarification on Group & Post Changes

Hello everyone! ๐Ÿ–๏ธ
We'd like to quickly clarify the purpose of the recent changes many of you may have noticed.

The recent announcement regarding today's changes to Similar Worlds:
https://similarworlds.com/100-Admin-Announcements/3431898-Updates-to-Groups-Posts-Hello-Similar-Worlds-The

Directly relates to this old announcement of "SW Group & Category Re-Structuring",
which we have also referred to numerous times as "Group Consolidation":
https://similarworlds.com/100-Admin-Announcements/2149687-SW-Group-Category-Re-Structuring-Feedback

Where we discussed proposed improvements to Similar Worlds, with regards to the Groups and Categories that have existed* on SW since its launch.

The goal is to [c=#800000]move Away from:
โ€ข The disorganized collections of "Groups" that were originally imported from EP.

โ€ข Having Questions exist in separate "Categories", completely unrelated to other posts.[/c]

and instead, [c=#005E2F]move Towards a more organized, Topic-based structure.[/c]

Instead of having to create Stories in oddly named groups like:
[c=#004A59][big]โ€ข I Love Animals Also People That Loves Animal[/big][/c]

Users will soon be able to post in better categorized topic areas;
for example:
[c=#004A59][big]Animals & Nature ยป Pets ยป Dogs[/big][/c]

[c=#009E4F]โ€ข Isn't my new Puppy cute!? ๐Ÿถ

โ€ข I have a funny story to share about my dog today! ๐Ÿ˜†

โ€ข What type of pet dog do you recommend for me?[/c]
Here we can see, that both Stories and Questions sit side by side, in a very natural, relevant format,
under the same Sub-Topic / Group, called "Dogs (Pets)"

This way, Relevance on SW will be Greatly Improved,
as users will be able to find topics they are interested in, much better grouped together than they currently are.

The same will benefit users who would like to [c=#800000]Block certain Topics[/c] as well.

[sep]

The recent changes we have made to Similar Worlds, was done in preparation for the full restructuring of Groups, which is something most users have been requesting for a long time.

To facilitate a smoother transition into the newer coming groups structure, we figured it would be best to release the changes in stages.

You should expect to see further improvements to Similar Worlds over the coming weeks,
leading towards a full change, into the new, organized, topic-based format we have been discussing with members for a long time.

Thanks and best regards!

Will the Groups/Topics be organized into categories?
Andrew ยท Admin
@quitwhendone, yes, I believe that describes it.

They may follow such a format:

Grandparent > Parent > Child (Categories)

Where at the head of the structure, is a very broad topic area,
progressively narrowing at each step.

@Andrew I think it's a great improvement. Especially the

Forest>Tree>Leaf or Grandparent>Parent>Child

categorizing system.

Thanks for all your hard work. I appreciate all the effort you guys put into improving the SW user experience.

Questions:
Will duplicate and closely related groups be consolidated?

Will users be able to create (and control access to) their own groups?

If not, what process will be implemented to suggest and implement new groups?

Will there be a process for having offensive or unused groups removed?

If a Group is removed what will happen to the posts under that group? Will they be relocated or simply removed?

Yes, they will be.

This is something we are considering, but we still need to figure out the best way of doing it.
Likely, rather than the user creating an actual Topic/Category/Group, they would have the ability to create their own "Private Collection" or Blog of some sort.

We'll continue focusing on releasing the initial Group Consolidation idea, and once things have settled, we will revisit the idea of "Personal Groups".

Topic areas that are unsuitable for the site, will not be created.
Once we have created the full list of suitable topic categories, we will attempt to migrate all existing Groups, each into the most relevantly matching topic category we can place it.

Existing posts that cannot fit into any suitable topic category we create, may likely be removed or archived/hidden, as it may indicate that the post is unsuitable to remain active on SW.

@Andrew Sounds good. Thank you. ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ

@Andrew Can you explain the difference between "Popular" and "Active" groups?

What about "Recommended?" How do groups get recommended?
ShaneMckay ยท 41-45, M
@Andrew So, YOU will decide what topics are suitable. Hmm. Kinda like Bejing does. I see.
NerdyPotato ยท M
@ShaneMckay yes, but that's not being introduced by this update. SW always had rules against things that are illegal in many countries.

And that's not unique to SW or even social media either. Stores and restaurants have house rules too.

Most people even have rules for visitors. When your neighbor asks you to take off your shoes at the door or not to take a dump on the coffee table, do you draw the comparison with censorship in Bejing there too?
