Admin Announcements

šŸ˜± šŸ¾ Hello, Similar Worlds! šŸ§ø šŸ¦‘

The SW Team is pleased to provide you with an update of what has been implemented since our last announcement.

[sep]

There has been LOADS of work over here.
We have several new features to release in the coming months, that we've been working in parallel. Please stay tuned for further updates!

Now, let's talk about what's released.

[big]ā€¢ Whiteboards šŸ–¼ļø[/big]

This was one of the [u][b]MOST requested[/b][/u] features since the very beginning of Similar Worlds!
We're very glad it's finally out, and the user feedback has been awesome so far. šŸ˜

[b]The Whiteboard is a place where people can send Gestures, Attributes, Images, Comments, and much more...[/b]

You can be [u]creative[/u] on the Whiteboards and have some nice chat that is not specific to any Post or context.
A "šŸ”† Good Morning" will be a good start šŸ˜Ž

[big]ā€¢ Attributes šŸ¤Ŗ[/big]

With Attributes, you can give your opinion about someone else, describing the best (or worst!) qualities of someone. You can rate other users with attributes via their personal Whiteboard.

[big]ā€¢ Gestures šŸŒ…[/big]

Nothing like being nice to someone you like, with a Gesture.
Sing a Song, wish Good Morning, give a Smile, pray, etc... all via their personal Whiteboard.
(a couple more are due to be added to the current list soon)

[big]ā€¢ Post Reply Permanent Links šŸ¤©[/big]

It is now possible to see a paginated view of all nested replies of a Post Comment.
We noticed that Comment threads on Posts can become very large, so we thought it would be convenient in some situations to have a better way of paginating through all those replies.

The way to access this view is by pressing/tapping on the Timestamp of the parent Comment (e.g. where it says "2 days ago") to enter.

However, if you come from a Notification, you go to the normal Post page, but the linked reply will be highlighted:

[big]ā€¢ System Fixes and Improvements šŸ§±ļø[/big]

We are continuously working on improving security and other technical elements.
As usual, we always work in correcting known glitches, fix bugs, and make improvements to the System, Security and User Interface.

Here are a few of the changes that might interest you:

- Continued work to prevent trolls and spammers/scammers.
- Notifications for Poll answers.
- New Profile Events page (you can access this in your Account Settings page, at the bottom).
- When posting, we are now reminding users of the Acceptable Behavior on Similar Worlds.
https://similarworlds.com/help/47-What-is-the-acceptable-behavior-on-Similar-Worlds
- Add Video button to the text tools, for better access to post a YouTube video.
- [Comment Deleted] warning in Notifications (so you know in advance whether a comment is deleted, in your notifications).
- We will not show pictures of Blocked users in the Blocked List, anymore.
- Better filtering for Messages, sending unwanted messages to Message Requests.
- A number of improvements to the Report Abuse reasons (removing some useless ones and adding new), for better organization.

šŸ’” [b][c=#BF0000]If you find any weird behavior in our system, please let us know straight away by sending any of the admins a Private Message, an email to us or open a Staff Support Ticket.
This is the best way to reach us (rather than creating a public post) and ensure that we will look into the problem as soon as possible.[/c][/b]

---

Thank you for your support and we hope you continue to stay with us.

We are constantly listening to your suggestions, so please keep giving them to us, as they are very important to the future of Similar Worlds.

Very kind regards,
- The SW Team

Not being able to see blocked users photos in the blocked list means that we canā€™t see which people weā€™ve blocked are still here and which arenā€™t. We canā€™t distinguish whether someone is totally removed or simply inactive, thus we canā€™t make an informed decision whether to unblock a user who shows as ā€œcancelledā€.
I feel this change punishes those who have blocked and therefore benefits those who have been blocked....which I think is not desirable.
Nuno Ā· Admin
@DragonFruit You can use the "Show Canceled" function in the Blocked Users page.

Keepitsimple Ā· 51-55, F
And the names change and you canā€™t tell the difference until you unblock them and have another round with them.@DragonFruit
Nuno Ā· Admin
@Keepitsimple Regarding changing username, why would someone care about another user changing username, if they are blocked anyway?
Keepitsimple Ā· 51-55, F
Because you may unblock somebody if the block limit is almost exhausted and then find out who they are when they wind up back in your feeds.
@Nuno
DragonFruit Ā· 61-69, M
@Nuno But that still makes no distinction as to whether someone is simply inactive (purple X) or whether their account has been deleted (šŸš«), so offers no real information we could use to determine whether to unblock. I just think itā€™s poorly thought out and favors the wrong side (those who have been blocked).
Nuno Ā· Admin
@Keepitsimple I understand. But users actually change their profile picture more often than their username. So, having the picture visible isn't so beneficial.
Nuno Ā· Admin
@DragonFruit If a user is inactive, they can very well come tomorrow and start harassing you again. A user is only gone permanently when their account is canceled. We have a number of users who put their account on Hiatus almost every day, so that doesn't mean they are safe to unblock.
DragonFruit Ā· 61-69, M
@Nuno Having the picture shows whether they are active....which is more beneficial than having to jump through hoops to try to figure it out , only then sometimes getting no definitive answer.
Keepitsimple Ā· 51-55, F
Thatā€™s true. I donā€™t know what the answer is to be honest. They will slip through one way or the other so I suppose really we just deal with it as we along.

Anyway....thank you for all your work..we know you guys are working on improvements and to make the site even more fun. šŸ¤—@Nuno
DragonFruit Ā· 61-69, M
@Nuno Exactly the reason i WANT to be able to see that difference. You could take away the whiteboard for all I care, but I want to be able to tell who is permanently cancelled....not being able to see the photo prevents me from being able to tell if they are truly gone or simply on hiatus. I feel like I shouldnā€™t have to explain this....itā€™s just a BAD decision.
Nuno Ā· Admin
@DragonFruit Like I said, you can use the "Show Canceled" link to filter by canceled users.

@DragonFruit @Nuno A better solution to this problem would be to remove the limit on the number of blocks.

The only reason I have to unblock people is because I am bumping up against the 500 block limit. But often I cannot recall who most of the blocks were, that I blocked a year ago, or why I had blocked them. Sometimes the username is not enough. But the avatar might help. Also, sometimes the username is benign or does not remind me much about who the user is. Yet the avatar is not benign so I clearly can tell why I blocked them and why I do not want to unblock. For example, if the avatar is a man in a diaper, a minor (who had pretended to be an adult), Hitler, Trump, or a Confederate battle flag, then I know why I blocked the person.

Yet if we had unlimited blocks, I could just block and forget about it, forever. Oh, I might go back and unblock the cancelled people, to clean things up. But I would no longer have to agonize over granting amnesty to people whose offenses I have long since forgotten.

One bad thing now is that I will unblock an ancient block, and then encounter them again and quickly realize my error and have to block them again. Ugh.

And one person I unblocked recently remembered that I blocked her and started asking me why, and said that it was stupid for me to have blocked her, and my reasons were lame. She got all fussy about it. I had no memory of her at all. I felt so uncomfortable, so I had to block her again.
Nuno Ā· Admin
@JoyfulSilence Hello. We will discuss your feedback - thanks for it.
Regarding the limit of block, please note that VIP users can boost the block limit to 5000.
Thank you.
DragonFruit Ā· 61-69, M
@Nuno And like I said, the ā€œshow cancelledā€ link is an extra step and still DOESNā€™T distinguish between users who have been cancelled and those who are simply inactive. The feature makes it MORE DIFFICULT for us to manage our account. If thatā€™s simply a poor judgment, it should be corrected....if itā€™s a ploy to try to get more people to buy VIP, itā€™s insidious.
Nuno Ā· Admin
@DragonFruit I really don't understand what's the problem with Show Canceled. It does make the separation between fully Canceled and those Inactive, because the people in that list are ONLY canceled/suspended/terminated users. The temporarily inactive users don't appear there, so any users in the Show Canceled list are generally SAFE to be unblocked.

The reason for this change was not to get more people to buy VIP. We got some complaints by our users that people could stalk their profile picture through that list, and that was the reason we decided to remove the pictures.

Note that other social networks, such as Facebook, do not show any profile pictures on the Blocked list.
Keepitsimple Ā· 51-55, F
I guess it comes down to choosing between blocking and muting carefully and if you unblock accidentally or unknowingly then in 24 hours you reblock them. As for who can or canā€™t see my pic in the block list I donā€™t care. They can choke on it. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø@Nuno
DragonFruit Ā· 61-69, M
@Nuno Thank you...you could have told us that ahead of time so weā€™d know (all I needed was a sufficient explanation). I was an attorney....and some legal definitions didnā€™t mean the same thing to everybody. When a change like this is made, PLEASE give a detailed explanation so that weā€™ll all know (a lot of us dinā€™t equate ā€œcancelledā€ with "completely gone".
