How should one handle transition from peer to manager in the corporate world?

Especially when some of your colleagues were your friends and don't see you as their manager.

Should be a lead in, not a big jump.

At least to assistant manager, if not a lead position before that.

The corporate world is doing it oh so wrong. Heck even putting unqualified people in as managers.
