You can question whether any country is a force for good. It's complicated, obviously!

In the 1800's Great Britain banned slavery, and tried to get other countries to do the same. On the face of it, that sounds like a good and noble thing, but part of me really feels like GB was trying to hurt other countries economically as much as actually freeing slaves.

Every country is going to put itself first mostly, or every country's government (the people running it) will put its wants/needs ahead of other things.

So, to answer the question, is America a force for good? I think it has been, and can be, but I don't know if it IS more of a force for good right now. There are certainly many US citizens who are admirable and have their hearts in the right place. I think the government can have them too. I'm just dubious of the government from the past decade or so.
