Every group since the first reading of Revelations had interpreted the mark of the beast to match their times. Sometimes we forget to remember that the letters were written for a specific group of Christian’s during a specific time of persecution and while forming the first churches.
I don’t believe John was writing as a prophesy, but as an encouraging message of God’s faithfulness for those under persecution of the forward moving Romans.
Was his dream God sent? I believe it was. But not for people to spend millenniums “decoding” as a weapon of fear.
