it's not the subject, it's the teacher

@mrmoose: I agree, however, if by the time anyone is in secondary school, especially in a competitive environment, to rely on the teacher to make the subject interesting can be a fatal flaw. I was taught by Jesuits with intellects of the highest order. I learned that school, like life, can be approached in one of two ways. Either one is a victim to the experience or one is a creator of the experience. It doesn't rationalize away the bad things in life or the ironic. Instead, like in the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius it makes each individual responsible for his own perceptions.

By the time one is ten or eleven one should be trained in how to make even the most soporific of subjects alive with meaning....personal meaning. This is the transition from egocentric thinking to one of pursuing excellence because that is the personal standard one holds for oneself.

This takes time to develop, yes, so it has to begin when the child is young and still dancing on the fence post where he thinks that life should be handed to him on a silver platter on one end and rudely discovering on the other end that in actuality there are falls....that hurt....and no one to rescue you.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be entertained and inspired. But it's flat out deadly to expect its presence to be the cause of a good grade.
