Why do we dream?

How are we supposed to interpret our dreams?
My dream last night was weird. Somehow the sweet elderly lady was a real nasty, bitter, sad matriarch who was on the verge of losing everything because she had to keep up appearances of being the "Strong One"
Do you have weird dreams?
Sometimes. I think one of the strangest things is when someone (usually not even someone who ever figured significantly in my life) shows up in a dream when I haven't consciously thought about them for 30 years. Makes me wonder what's going on in my head when I'm not looking.

I think mostly dreams are our subconscious mind tidying up and taking out the trash in its own odd little way. I don't often attach much meaning to them.

@Mamapolo2016 I do not attach meaning to them either. Simply some of them make no sense at all, some of them interweave many different aspects of my life lived into a mishmash. Really weird at times.
@Gusman I know. Like your mind perceives some tear in the fabric of your life and is trying to weave a patch over it.

I had two weird dreams last night. The second one was that my son and his girlfriend had a baby. The baby was a stunning little girl, with the same colour hair as his girlfriend (it is kind of dyed auburn) and the brightest azure-blue eyes. My son is has always been very into computers etc and when I asked him the baby's name, he said she was called 'Apple'. I said, 'At least she will always be able to buy stuff with her name on it'. lololol

As we don't know all, there are unilluminated regions in our consciousness, the unconcious, dreams comes from there.

@Gusman Perhaps all which hasn't been fully processed yet.
Gusman · 61-69, M
@SW-User Certainly might include that.
I know sometimes I go to bed in a bit of a muddle as to what to do about something but when I wake up, often the issue has been resolved and I can take affirmative action.
The adage, "Let me sleep on it" seems to have some credence.

@Gusman Excellent observance :)

Ask Freud for that one, or a dream judge haha. I personally rarely dream (I mean I don't remember my dreams because they say that we dream every time we sleep), but when I do, I have boring and not remarkable dreams.

By my understanding, dreams are our brains "relaxing". They don't have to concern themselves with our balance, locomotion, speech, interactions with others, etc. Personally, I don't think our dreams mean anything. It's just a collection of images and other sensory input that the mind is looking over rather like flipping through old photos.

@xixgun A great way to interpret what dreams are. Thank you for putting it so succinctly.
I can get my head around that

I think sometimes dreams are just random stuff, just the mind wandering aimlessly through all the junk that it has accumulated over the years. But sometimes I think it's our subconscious trying to work through some stuff that we aren't able to work through when we're awake, for whatever reason.

Yes, I sometimes have weird dreams, but some are quite satisfying. After I got fired from my first job, I had a dream that I saw my boss again, and I ripped all her hair out, knocked her down with one punch, and then stomped on her head, until I woke up. I have to admit, I felt just a little better when I woke up.

We dream because it is glitches in the software that makes us believe we are alive. We are all holograms.

@SW-User Excellent. I love a bit of Sci Fi in my dreams
