Prompt doesn’t define factor roles, so multiple repeated-addition forms are valid.

5 * 3 is Five three times.

5 + 5 + 5

But the point was to prepare for Arrays.

There's a convention here that isn't spoken on the sheet itself as in no way would 5 * 3 ordinarilly be 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 unless there's a convention that was only mentioned in the class room going.

since we are talking arrays then the formula is A * B

where A = The number of rows and B = the number of items per row.

However, this convention is not on the worksheet itself so it just has to be intuited from the teachers corrections in purple.

In ordinary circumstances 5 * 3 would mean 5 multipied by 3 so the repeated addition strategy would yield 5 + 5 +5 but this isn't ordinary circumstances since it's preperation for arrays.

the reason this is a "Trick question" meant to trip you up is that the convention isn't stated. the formula is not on the work sheet itself. we just have to deduct it from the teachers corrections.

the question should have been stated at the end 5 groups of 3 instead of 5 x 3. this work sheet is low quality and I blame the teacher for picking crappy teaching materials. The question itself is poorly worded.
