I Play Scrabble

Scrabble is a game I've enjoyed since I was about twelve. Games started during the weekends at my grandparents house. My grandmother was a wonderful partner. Ever since I moved to California, I've carried a small travel board with me in hopes that I could find someone interested in a game amongst our daily activities.

One of my favorite partners of all times was a long time neighbor. Her daughter and I were close friends, but we also had a very special bond between us. I was always up earlier than anyone else in the house and would always start the coffee brewing. As soon as she saw the kitchen light on, she would come to the side door and quietly tap on the window. If she got there before I was up, I would find her in the yard, plucking snails off the aloe vera plants.

She always came in with a big hug, an empty coffee cup, and a mind ready for a game of scrabble before the rest of the  house was awake. We had just enough time for for one game. If it was my day off, we'd continue to play until I had something else I needed to do. At times, we'd play all day.

When she passed away, not only did I lose a scrabble partner, but also a wonderful friend and confidant. Her daughter gave me the coffee cup that she always drank out of when she came over. It now sits on my bookcase as a reminder of good times past.

Today, my scrabble board still lives in my backpack, with hopes of another partner. I have also found an online scrabble game that I can play with others on my iPad. And every time I play, I know that she is watching over me, shaking her head at every move I may have missed.
