Why is it that strategy games maps either too big or too small?

Take Total War 2...the map size being, the size of Europe.

Then there's Stellaris where you can basically have a galaxy...it's weird :/

I think that's what I liked most about Civilisation. Choose your own map size!

@GlassDog: Stellaris is "kinda" the same...though every map either feels too big in it, or way too small :/

@Fangirlsarah1996: I really need to play Stellaris. I love 4x games.

@GlassDog: If you do get it, mod the shit out of it, the game is okay...just very annoying without mods.

@Fangirlsarah1996: Hmm, advice gratefully received, I'm probably getting it next month when I move and have better broadband.

@GlassDog: Yeah there are a lot of "forgotten" things that mods fix...like they changed how "Influence" works, so that it's rarer and you can buy more important things with it, but...there's this one thing that uses influence that they forgot to change to something else...so the cost for it is FAR greater than the reward in the current version of the game.

@GlassDog: I haven't played Stellaris, but I've payed other Paradox games, and sadly they always go to DLC hell. They release major DLC's later that feel like they should have been in the main game, and you need to drop like, $200s to not feel like you have an incomplete product. If you're interested, I'd recommend Endless Space 2 as an alternative. Amplitude is way easier going on the DLC.

@Xuan12: Stellaris doesn't have much in the way of "Vital" DLC...the DLC out now does add meaningful things, but the game can easily be played without them :)

@Xuan12: I noticed Endless Space 2. Hasn't it just been released? That's another one on my list. I have really crappy mobile broadband and a limit on my downloads, but I'm getting fast, unlimited broadband when I move in a couple of weeks. I'll have a look at this too. It looked pretty good from the reviews I saw.

@Fangirlsarah1996: I guess it's a matter of perspective. Maybe they just haven't done it YET. But if you look at Crusader Kings II or Europa Universalis IV, you'll see a mile long DLC list, with at least 5 major, $20+ DLCs that the community often considers crucial to gameplay experience. :/

@Xuan12: Then again, Stellaris has Workshop support, so the point is moot when modders can just do the job for Paradox.
Xuan12 · 31-35, M
@GlassDog: Yeah, I like it. I can't really compare it since I haven't played Stellaris, but I also have Endless Legend, their previous game, and I still go back and play a round of it at least a few times a year.

@Fangirlsarah1996: Maybe major mods would ease the DLC hell that Paradox has come to rely on, but we'll see. They've lost a lot of my good will over the years with the way things have been going.

@Xuan12: Do you know if you can play in VR? That's going to be a big selling point for me soon too.
Xuan12 · 31-35, M
@GlassDog: I don't know. I'm not into VR personally, especially not for 4x. Though I could definitely see that for a game like The Long Dark.
GlassDog · 41-45, M
@Xuan12: It's pretty good for things like space traders / combat / driving games. Less good for a traditional 4x, though, I agree.
