Why tf are games so expensive these days

I'm cheap, and only pay for games that are $15 and under
Maybe $20 if I am desperate. The most I've payed for a game was $20 (it was Soul Calibur II for the PS2).

I don't use steam. I like hard copies.
The only games I'd buy on steam are visual novels, such as Clannad (which is $50 on steam and I don't have a credit card).
