I am familiar with the time when Bob Barker was the host (before "The Price Is Right"). It was rigged, with trick questions asked by the host; Bob Barker would say, "if you can't tell the truth [answer the question], you have to pay the consequences".
They would have crazy set-ups of things contestants had to do, on-stage, outside in the parking lot--all sorts of zaniness.

@iamnikki Ellen's Game of Games had a meanness to it which was not part of Truth or Consequences during the Bob Barker years which I happened to see.
