Games with great writing are always my favorites. So I like the point & click adventure games likw the new Telltale Games, or Life is Strange (which is my favorite game ever). The "walking simulator" style like Gone Home or Stanley Parable are also favorites.

RPGs are also great. I don't mind Skyrim/Fallout but I prefer the Bioware style games with a stronger narrative and characters. So Dragon Age, Mass Effect and the older ones like Baldur's Gate 2 and Planscape: Torment.

I enjoy FPS games, although I'm not great at them. I play a lot of Overwatch and I'm just terrible. Favorite FPS is probably Spec Ops: The Line which advertises itself as a CoD clone, but is the more harrowing mindfuck of a game.

Various indy games as well, if they've got cool ideas I'm into it. Currently playing Icey which is hilarious.

Annnd my wife loves World of Warcraft so I play that with her and have for a long time, but not too too much.

I don't actually play video games all the time, I've just been playing them for a long time, lol.

Lol well that's ok. I like your succinctness in describing what it is you like in each game.

For well written games like the ones you listed, they don't really have a lot in the way of what would traditionally considered 'game play' (i.e. action packed moments), but that allows for the unfolding/discovery/playing out of the narrative itself to take centre stage.

I'm sensing a theme of you liking story- and character-driven experiences here. These are usually the ones which are well written, because again, the narrative and characters are taking a more central place in each of those RPGs.

What is it about FPS games that you like?

A cool idea is a cool idea. But are there any that have stood out to you?

Well, WoW is a brilliant, all-consuming game, so I can see why you and your wife would play it. But it's good that you don't go overboard with it, because that's when issues start to arise.

I enjoy good gameplay too, but story and character absolutely trump gameplay. What I want from a video game is it to resonate in some way with me.

As for indy games, Life is Strange is seriously the best game I've played. It's about a teenage girl who learns to reverse time and is just mind-blowingly original and devastating. Deals with themes like suicide, assault, euthanasia, and big abstract ideas about art and causation. It has flaws but it is so unlike anything I've played. Also played the Cat Lady which is about a depressed lonely woman who has to go murder people for the devil. Icey is a side scroller with a narrator who keeps screaming at you for not following his directions.

As for FPS games, Overwatch, Tf2, CS:Go are my faves for multiplayer. For single player the half-life series, Portal, Spec Ops: The Line (which is another mindfuck), the new Wolfenstein was great, and I plan on getting the new DOOM soon since I grew up playing the originals.

That makes a lot of sense, Jerry. So it's characters and story over gameplay every time.

Life is Strange does sound like a brilliant game, from what I've heard from you and others.

OK, but what is it that those FPS games have that inspires you to play them? Do they conform to your ideal of story/character over gameplay? Or is there another reason?

Sorry for being so intrusive though. I'm just trying to learn what it is different people see in the games they like to play, and what fundamentally drives them to play those games

It's cool! There's no story to speak of in any of the multiplayer FPS, it's pure gameplay. I enjoy them because they're a skill you need to learn and improve. Same reason I like raiding in Warcraft. It's a social experience too, so you hang out with people and work as a team to overcome challenges.

@TyphoidJerry: OK, I see what you mean now. The social and challenge overcoming aspects are worthy reasons to play
