Why is it in video games that the main character can hunt a species to extinction with no consequences?

I mean...I know you want that cool belt...but do you have to kill 100 albino tapirs to get it? xD

They should totally make consequences for eliminating a certain species. Like have it change the storyline.

@MrSmooTh Red Dead Redemption "kinda" had that.

There was a certain gun called the Buffalo Rifle.

There was also one herd of Buffalo near where it's sold...to unlock the gun you have to kill them all...though the sad irony is you cannot use the gun, designed to kill buffalo, on a single one...as they're all dead...

@MrSmooTh You also get to wipe out all but one Sasquatch in the Undead Nightmare DLC.

Other than that, I haven't seen many instances of extinction...except when it's a species that deserves it, like Deathclaws or Reapers or Giant Evil Ape things.
