Why is it in video games that the main character can hunt a species to extinction with no consequences?

I mean...I know you want that cool belt...but do you have to kill 100 albino tapirs to get it? xD

Cause it's a way to manifest the player's ego, that their life has more value than a 100 of any other or the same species.

@SW-User Still though, it's amusing how your character can be classed as a mass murderer (By real life standards) but it'll never get brought up ingame.

To be fair in Dragon Age: Inquisition one of your party members does note that you seem to kill an abnormally large amount of people daily.

I don't think the rules of heroes/anti-heroes apply so much to RPG's. If it was a linear game, it would be easier to depict an anti-hero and have him face consequences for his actions. But most RPG's don't have better gameplay mechanics for grinding other than killing enemies. I don't mind it if the combat is good, I was never a big fan of the combat in the Dragon Age games.

@SW-User At least the actual "RPG" part of the Dragon Age series was good though...a lot of developers simply think an RPG is when you go around with a sword or with magic and kill stuff.

They forget the Role Playing aspect...I've played Dragon Age Inquisition with three characters...each feel like completely different people...there aren't many of those kinds of games anymore, heck even Fallout 4 has lost it's "thing" you just play as mom/dad who's looking for their son.

@SW-User But yh I can agree with you, Dragon Age's combat is a bit clunky until you know what you're doing.

And by "Know what you're doing" I mean not know what you're doing in any way xD I've been there lol

@Fangirlsarah1996 Oh, I loved the writing in Dragon Age: Origins, some of the best I've ever seen in any RPG, I had to quit playing it though cause I couldn't stand the combat. I've only played a little bit of DA: Inquisition, but I can tell the combat got better.. at least for my taste.

I think as a term, RPG is evolving, so now you have games like Undertale that use different mechanics and adds its own definitons. But I still shudder anytime I hear someone calling Call of Duty an RPG. 😩

@SW-User It was very old school...kinda like KotOR (Biowares Star Wars game...same level of writing, but older) But yh in comparison Inquisition is far more fluid...especially when you figure out how guarding and barriers work...you can be literally immortal then xD

I don't agree...I feel like developers take the term out of context a lot and it leads to RPGs that aren't really RPGs.

I shudder anytime I hear someone call Call of Duty a good game xD
