These are the American Girl dolls.
Each comes from a different era of American history, and each comes with books about her life, as well as accessories which reflect the stories
So this doll will have a story about what it was like to be hearing impaired at her moment in history.

When you pull the string, the doll says "What was that? Speak up will ya?"
Or like my dad does, points to his good ear for me to yell in it...

Do these dolls do ALS (American sign language)?
Mamapolo2016 · F
@Kstrong I don’t know … but I suspect there may be dolls for other countries too.
Kstrong · 56-60, F
@Mamapolo2016 well, do tgese dolls know sign language for their appropriate country? Or just advertised as being hard of hearing
Mamapolo2016 · F
@Kstrong Sorry. I didn’t do doctoral work on this.

But it is a really cool idea. Children who are hearing impaired will see themselves represented, too.

@bijouxbroussard Agreed. We lived in a rural and non-diverse county.
When my daughter was about three, she and I were shopping. A black woman was in line just before us and my kid was fascinated by her. Always sociable, my daughter went closer. The woman smiled at her, all the encouragement she needed. She reached out her little hand and touched the woman’s hand. “Does that (blackness) come off?”
This lovely woman crouched down and said, “No, honey. That’s my skin.” She explained how black people had hair and skin that was different from white people and that was one of the best things. “All different people but just people.”
I listened, stunned. I won’t say my child had never seen people of a different race, but they were few and far between.
My mother made cabbage patch dolls for the grandkids. I called her and a couple of weeks later my little girl received a large package in the mail. Inside was a black doll, a Native American one, a Chinese doll…you get the drift. My daughter and I played for hours, looking up locations on a globe, reading about customs and traditions.
It was a rich moment, standing in line with that patient, kind black woman. I wish I knew how to find her.
