It's a sad irony...

In any story or fantasy about time travel, there is a fear of radically changing the present by doing something small in the past.

Yet when you do something small in the present, most people will laugh at you for believing it could make a difference.
It's probably easier to leave the present unchanged than it would be to reimagine an entire storyline based on the impact of a seemingly small change.

Look at WWII, for example... had that turned out differently, we could all be Germany now, with America potentially being the only other country on the planet... or, maybe, we would have created an uprising within the ranks...

the death of a butterfly crushed by someone hundreds of years ago can affect me now. it matters to me.

the death of a butterfly crushed by me now may not affect me now. in hundreds of years it may affect someone else, but I won't exist. it doesn't matter to me.
