The diminishment of words over time....

Normal (today) people: I met a guy he was ordinary.

Victorian writers: He was, in the way of men, possessed of a rudimentary intelligence. His countenance ordinary, bearing mild, with some weakness about the shoulders, his hair the color of ash; he spoke of the weather.

Words used to paint a picture and convey emotion and context..

Now they're more like scribble..

@Majorlatency Yup as well as the art of conversation
@Lilymoon Exactly.. I love conversation with the right person..
You should be a screen writer for The Young & The Restless
Exactly! I’ll admit I dated some gal back in the 90’s who was addicted to a couple of soaps including General Hospital and after awhile I got hooked even when we broke up I was recording them while I was at work 😂. This is between you and I okay 😳😉@Lilymoon

I think back then, they got paid by the number of words 🤣 There is an art to the "understatement".

I've been thinking that if we turn AI on Dostoevsky's novels, they can be reduced to brochures.

People certainly had a way with words in Victorian times. Quite a contrast to the way we express ourselves today.
Lilymoon · F
@Rutterman yeah sometimes it's nice stepping back into their way of life thru books

People were way too verbose back then - and their language often overly florid. Of course, without all the visual aids, they did need to paint a picture with their words.
Lilymoon · F
@sciguy18 yeah they used a ridiculous amount of words haha and you're right... probably because of the lack of visual aids

Right!?! I like those books. The words feel more like music. Everything was just slower then. ❤️
Lilymoon · F
@JustNik yeah I love 'em too....perfect way to describe it
Where did you get my autobiography?!?!?
Lilymoon · F
