My first day away from SW (sort of)

Even when I am not on SW, I write my thoughts down on the computer to post when I come back, if I think they are worth anything.

This was written on Friday. My Sabbath post was written on Saturday, and I can see the progression of how some of my scattered thoughts on Friday became more concrete thoughts on Saturday.

My first day away from SW was kind of interesting. I started the morning listening to classical music, then an Edgar Allen Poe poem, then W.B Yeats' best poems. Then I decided to watch a bit of a spooky show recommended by a friend here. Then I snuck onto SW for a minute to let my friend know what I thought of the movie. I shared with him a couple of movies I like. I like movies set in asylums, so my friend recommended another one. I watched that one too, and then I came back to SW ( just for a minute) and told him I like that one too. My friend here is good at recommending films that might move me or expand my mind. He is also very good at recommending literature for me to consume, which most definitely gets me thinking. Anyway, I then moved on to watching a few scary asylum movies. All the while making 2 cookie sheet-sized pizzas because it was the prep day. 🙂

Once a year, and only for a few days, around Halloween, I allow myself to watch these types of movies. They are greatly triggering to me sometimes (except the funny, not very scary type films), so I really limit viewing. I like them very much, though.🙂

However, as I watched, I started thinking about how many of my ancestors have been in state mental hospitals, workhouses, prisons, etc., and there were a lot. My mother was in our state mental hospital 3 times. I guess that may be why I am drawn to any information, movies, personal experiences, etc, about asylums. It is kinda in my DNA, and I always think "There for the grace of God go I."😔

I have had ancestors in Pennhurst ( 2 distant cousins with epilepsy. They lived and died there.), more ancestors than I can count in Allegheny County Workhouse and Inebriate Asylum, and 3 ancestors in Allentown State Hospital. All of these are in Pennsylvania. These are on my father's line, but since my mother and father are distantly related, it could be on my mother's line as well. 🤔

Anyway, I started watching " Suffer The Little Children" again. I am going to add that one to this post. It is very eye-opening, and I hope we ( as a people) don't ever forget how badly these kids/people were treated. This happened everywhere in the USA, maybe other places as well. I have watched it two times before, and it always makes me so sad to think 2 of my ancestors lived in this place. With epilepsy only, they were probably higher functioning, and I like to imagine that, like me, they used their higher skills to help those around them with lower skills. I mean, I had to get it from somewhere, right? We have a saying in my family, and I don't know where it originated, but it is " Those who can do, help those who can't do".
🙂

It sounds like you've had an enriching time away from SW even though your presence is missed.
