Yes. I have had a few that have lasted many years as friends. If you are open about intent then they work. They knew I was dating and was upfront about being friends only due to distance. I have talked to a few of them through ups and downs in relationships and giving advice on what might work and won't. Online only relationship can work but you both have to be in the same place and be accepting of the limitations.
