I think that they can. I have had the same platonic female friend for over 30 years. Her husband accepts me as part of the family and her kids have all grown up with me and call me uncle.

@allsfinebime2 Granted it's not easy but if you truly love someone as a friend? Then you have to suppress any emotion of romantic thought as well as be there on the sidelines as a friend and confidant. My friend happens to be attractive which sometimes make the friendship difficult. But she is happy with her marriage and kids and I don't really mind at all so long as she is happy. I would never dream of ruining her happiness for my own satisfaction. I know more about her than her own husband does because we both became friends when she was single. We are more like brother and sister to each other. ☺☮
