This appears to be the non-venomous Garter snake. Harmless.

I used to live in the Midwest and they were very common on my property. They are more afraid of you really. Technically, they do have a mild venom but it does not have any effect on humans as its so mild and they don't have a good delivery system for it anyway. The one you photographed appears to be in near full size. Thanks for sharing.. @Niloo
